Matchmaker:

Over the years, I've found myself becoming quite a matchmaker. The minute I meet an eligible someone who I deem to be somewhat attractive, I immediate begin scouring my internal database for a suitable match amongst my single friends. It might take me a few days, weeks or even months to find the perfect counterpart, but once I've made my match... look out! It will then become my mission to make my dream couple of the moment a reality.

In the past, I have resorted to somewhat devious, brazen and outright embarrassing ways to get my star-crossed couple together. I'd often take the direct approach which basically equated to hitting someone on the head and attempting to fuse the two together.

Obviously, this method did not have the outcome I had hoped for and didn't do a lot for my reputation as matchmaker.

I've matured quite a bit in recent years, and I've learned that the best approach to matchmaking often involves months of scrutiny, dropping subtle hints at just the right moment and adjusting to the idea that not all of my matches will meet with success.

My husband used to think I was crazy, and it got to the point where I would have to do my matchmaking on the side, away from his exasperated eye. But during the past year or so, our matchmaking ideas have fallen into sync. This is what I needed all along! A matchmaking partner in crime!

Suddenly, my success rate, or should I say, OUR success rate took off like a rocket. The first success was matching up one of my best friends with a girl I used to work with. While we worked together, I told this girl on numerous occasions about my good friend, marveling at the number of things they had in common and what a great couple they would make. Unfortunately, at that time, they were both involved in dead-end relationships, and neither was free to explore the opportunity.

A few months later, my friend came to visit. We were planning to go to a local pub for a few pints, so I invited the girl along. Well, the two of them hit it off like nobody's business and entered into a relationship almost immediately. Although in time, they decided to go their separate ways, a friendship ensued and both were happy to have met, thanks to my meddling way.

Most recently, and our greatest matchmaking success to date, has been between my sister and a younger guy who's been a close friend for some time.

My husband and I had picked him out as a potential match almost as soon as we met him. He had nearly all of the qualities my sister was looking for - the only area that he was lacking in was his age. It turns out he is five years younger than my sister, but thankfully, she had matured to the point where the age difference didn't bother her and she gave him a chance.

Since that point, those two have been inseparable and we all hear the distinct ring of wedding bells in the not too distant future.

Time and experience has revealed that the world of a matchmaker is often fraught with disappointment. As well, when you go about matchmaking, you really need to make sure that both parties are actually interested in a relationship to begin with. However, my efforts have met with enough successes that I am not quite ready to give up my pastime just yet. My husband and I have a couple of fresh matches waiting on the back burner, and I'm confident that another success if just around the corner!
