Yes, small things do have import to those with other than small minds. Sometimes, the seemingly most insignificant things are the most rewarding, most valuable. When IU was in first grade?now remembering because of this item, personalized pencils, crossing my radar?we had a septuagenarian teacher, Mr. Rising. She was the archetypal surrogate mother or grandmother-type, soft-spoken and patience even Mother Therese would have envied. She went the extra mile to give us an optimum education of the alphabet then the See Dick run over Spot readings, the coloring practice and colors of the rainbow recitation, and simple math with licorice sticks lessons. Mrs. Rising also gave us gifts. I remember none of the others save the personalized pencils she individually wrapped and gifted us at Christmas.
I obviously wasn?t a social or other genius at six, but somehow I intuited the value of that red pencil with my name emblazoned in gold leafing?keeping it as I did for several years. And I took the respect for that kind of personalized pencils, personalized gifts mentality with me forever. I learned to crochet and embroider and make stuff, just as all kids did, to gift the parents on father?s day with a calendar handmaid and hand-glittered or on mother?s day to do the golden macaroni frame or the clay novelty item that both would surely treasure for life.
Later, I learned the honor and devotion hand-made and personalized gifts showed to employees: I hand-embroidered bookmarks for each of the tutors working ?under? me in the learning center where I was Acting Coordinator. Each bookmark had the person?s name and a symbol or emblem representing a favorite pastime or a skill or art the person was known for. Sarah god a Christian logo of sorts, Mary got a book, Jeff got a sailboat.
I always wanted to replicate that first experience of mine (having to do with school and all) by giving each personalized pencils, but the companies don?t do individual names on a set of thirty. Or if they do, the set-up charge is absurd. But along the same lines of thinking of the personalized pencils as advertisement, we can get just about anything else embossed, engraved, or printed with a company name, an organization name, a school mascot, a corporate logo, or anything else we want to share?wedding matchbooks or candy packets, golf clubs, balloons, briefcases and books, etc..
If you want to be remembered, if you want each and every one of your many minions to feel cherished, or if you want to be delighted yourself, the personalization is the way to go. And if some dingbat makes a derogatory comment about how small things amuse small minds, don?t be discouraged. Instead, just look him up and down, stopping at the central region with your eyes, and agree. And then go back to enjoying your small gift.
