Although I have always been known as fashionable, in many ways I still see clothing as a strange and wondrous thing. You see, the way people decide what looks good and what doesn't is fascinating in its complexity. This is especially true with women's clothes. With men's clothes, things are more simple. If you wear something that is neat, well put together, and a bit artfully disheveled, you are set. With women's clothes, however, things get much more complicated. If you wear something slightly outrageous you just looks silly, but if you are extremely, self-consciously outrageous, you are fashionable again.
I found this out the first time I started wearing vintage wedding dresses. I was thrift store shopping with a friend, and I found the most adorable outfit. I wore a vintage wedding dress with leg warmers and a sweatband. It was the 80's, after all, and so it was easy to take a risk on silly clothing. My friends tried to discourage me from buying vintage wedding dresses. They thought that I was just wasting my money, and the wedding bridal gowns did cost more money than we were accustomed to spending at the thrift store. I was poor, and at the age of 16, I had to earn every dollar that I spent . It seemed like a waste of money to them. But I decided to take a risk and buy the vintage wedding dresses. It paid off.
From then on, wearing vintage bridal gowns, evening wear dresses, and the like, has been my trademark. It's strange how well vintage wedding dresses have done for me. They are almost as enduring as blue jeans, in fact. You see, no matter what era comes, they always look silly and over the top in the same way. People know that I am joking, even though they are all that I wear nowadays. Because of that, people accept me. They think I look cool and quirky. If I wore something a little less over-the-top than vintage wedding dresses, I would just look silly. As it is, I am trying so hard that people accept it. I guess there are people who wear vintage wedding dresses seriously, but I wouldn't want to be caught doing that. For me, it would defeat the whole point of it. I don't think it would even be fun anymore if I was getting married.
