Everyone sees some martial arts movies when they grow up. I remember the first time I saw ?Enter the Dragon?. Although it seems a little bit dated today, in its time it was a work of staggering genius. It was one of the best martial arts videos that have ever been made, and you could tell it when you saw the movie. The excitement was almost overwhelming.
Lately, however, I have been looking at a different kind of martial art video. You see, I have become interested in studying martial arts, but I don't really know where to start. Looking at martial arts video clips over the Internet seems like a great way to check it out. Of course, most of these are small teasers designed to get you to study one particular art or style. There are martial arts videos for Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Karate ? almost all of the martial arts. Most of them are sold by instructors who have martial arts instructional videos available.
The other day, I got so excited by a kung fu video clip that I went out and purchased the video. I tried it out at home. I was quite disappointed. Learning from martial arts videos is next to impossible. Unless you have had martial arts training, you really need an instructor to be able to pick up the subtleties of the movements. Martial arts videos can teach you some basic kicks, punches, and blocks, but it is almost impossible to know if you are really doing them correctly. Martial arts training videos are basically for armchair enthusiasts. I believe that if you want to go anywhere in the martial arts, you have to actually train at the dojo.
Nonetheless, it is still daunting to figure out which martial art to take. If I am going to make an informed decision, I have to watch a few more martial arts videos. Looking at martial arts demonstration videos can be pretty interesting, but I don't think it is where it's at. I really wants to see martial arts videos where different martial arts can compete so that I can see which ones work better. After all, anyone can make their martial art look good in the right context. The key is to see how well they hold up in fights against other martial arts. After all, what's the point of learning a martial arts if you don't learn to fight?
