There are so many difficulties to being a modern teacher that just were not an issue a decade ago that it is really enough to drive you batty. Although many people talk about violence in the schools, and particularly the school shooting epidemic, this is actually not the main concern of most teachers, as far as I can tell. As a teacher, what really worries me is the rise in plagiarism among todays kids. It does not, as many people believe, have anything to do with lowered standards of ethics. Kids have always tried to get away with what they believed that they could it is just in their nature. It has to do with the internet, as far as I can tell, and particularly with online book reports.
Although we try to teach them how to write book reports, learning to put their thoughts in an organized coherent fashion is, and always has been, a challenge for new writers. When this challenge gets to be too much for them, they can always go to the net and find an book report. There are thousands of book reports available all over the net, as well as scholarly essays that are very easy for students to plagiarize. Fortunately, teenagers are often not too quick, and it can be easy to spot when they plagiarize online book reports. There writing style will change, and often the report is only loosely related to the assigned topic. It is a good thing that this out and out stealing accounts for the majority of book reports which are not written by the actual student. Unfortunately, there is an even more problematic source for book reports online.
There are services that, for a fee, will write book reports for anyone who wants to pay the money. It is amazing how cheap these book reports are they can often be had for as little as ten dollars a page, or even less. And for that price, these teens can get a book report that they never had to do any work on at all. Not only are they cheating their class mates who work for their grads by turning in reports that they never even had to do anything for, but they are cheating themselves out of an education as well. With illiteracy at the high rate that it is in this country, and with many college grads having no idea how to put together a decent paper, we have to do something to make sure that kids who turn in stolen or ghost written book reports get caught!
