It's amazing how two little plasticine figures have had such an impact. Creator Nick Parker produced three half hour shorts that featured his characters Wallace and Gromit and then went on to his first full length feature. All four productions are available on a Wallace Gromit dvd. Parker and his team employed the stop motion animation technique, using clay figures. The stories are set in Lancashire, in the north of England and display a very British sense of humor. This has transferred successfully to American audiences.
Wallace is an eccentric inventor, whose inventions sometimes go wrong. He keeps going with cups of tea and his favorite cheese and crackers. Gromit, a highly intelligent dog, is his loyal companion. Gromit is very practical and likes to knit, read and listen to classical music. They live and work together as a team.
The first of the trilogy of shorts is A Grand Day Out from 1989. In this Wallace Gromit dvd, the pair has run out of the beloved cheese. When they discover that the local shop is closed, there's only one thing left to do. They must build a rocket and go to the moon, which is made of cheese of course. The story follows their subsequent adventures on the moon. The second outing was in The Wrong Trousers from 1993. A lodger comes to stay and causes all sorts of havoc. He is revealed as a wanted criminal and there is some doubt as to whether he really is a penguin. His plan to steal a diamond leads Wallace into big trouble.
The final short is A Close Shave from 1995. This story involves the two friends running a window cleaning business and there is romance in the air. Wallace falls for Wendolene, a very nice lady who owns a wool shop but he is shocked to find that she doesn't like cheese. Her robot dog, Preston, makes trouble for everyone.
With the success of the shorts and the fan adulation, it was time to make a movie. The feature film and Wallace Gromit dvd of The Curse of the Were-Rabbit were immensely popular, winning a Best Animated Feature Oscar. The project attracted some big name stars and characters were voiced by Helena Bonham Carter, Peter Kay and Ralph Fiennes. It's a funny send up of horror movies set in the world of a Giant Vegetable Competition. Wallace and Gromit try to protect the vegetables against rabbits but it all goes horribly wrong when Wallace tries to invent a rabbit that doesn't damage gardens. A Wallace Gromit dvd would make a perfect gift for someone who appreciates dry humor.
