Family planning is a last tougher for many people that it should be. You would think that planning a family would be a simple straightforward affair, but it is not. You see, in our society teens and young people are often confused about the options that they have. We do not educate them enough about birth control, and sometimes the information that they get is skewed or inappropriate. In addition, we teach them to hate and fear their bodies rather than to enjoy them. This results in neurotic behavior, impulsive choices, and a lack of family plans. Planning families is something that people don't do, not because of a lack of religious upbringing, but because of religious upbringing.
Having worked for Planned Parenthood for many years, I know all about the issues that people face with family planning. It is amazing how clearly defined the social trends are. Most of the people I know who have family planning crisises are young, from religious conservative families, poor, and poorly educated. Although our society acts as if promiscuity occurs because of liberal values, in fact the opposite is true. People who are taught about reproductive health at an early age are much less likely to become pregnant accidentally. They have the confidence and the educations to make the right choices about their bodies and their futures.
It isn't a new situation for me. I grew up in a family where family planning had never been part of the details. My parents had 6 kids, but only one source of income, so the family budget plan was always tight. My parents were doing the best they could, but they didn't have the education or opportunities to improve their lot in life. Basically, because they had poor education, they had never gone through family planning. It is hard to get more education, a better career, or any other improvements when you have to support six kids. Family planning would have made things easier for them, but they didn't use it. They didn't know how.
This is why it is so important to educate your kids about birth control options. No one wants it to get to the point of having to terminate a pregnancy, so family-planning really is an essential element in a responsible adult life. Although it may be awkward to have these conversations with your kids, as a parent you need to.
