Everyone has some kind of hobby. Some people love to read. I have a friend who spends hours a day reading. It takes up more time in his life than socializing does, and yet no one makes fun of his hobby. Everyone seems to think it is natural that he prefers the company of books to that of real people. So how come people make fun of my hobby of collecting football helmets? It really doesn't seem fair to me. Just because my living room is filled with helmet display cases doesn't mean that I'm any different than anyone else.
If I was like my cousin and had a room filled with art display cabinets instead of football helmet display cases, no one would care. No one even comments on his collection except to say that it is beautiful. I don't think it is beautiful. All of the statues of nudes in majestic poses seem so hackneyed to me. Give me a football helmet collection any day of the week, I say. None of them promise very much, but they deliver on every bit of the promise. An NFL football helmet collection is exactly what it should be. Each signed NFL artifact in my football helmet display case simply shows my dedication to a particular team or a particular player. I know that it is not something that would excite passion in a lot of people, but my sports fan friends go crazy about it.
The fact is that helmet display cases are necessary to keep my collection safe. No one would question it if I chose to keep my spare computer parts in their own protective cases, but when I do that with my football helmets everyone thinks I am obsessed. My sister laughed out loud at me last time she visited! I really don't understand what is so funny. Collectors objects, whether they are trading cards, stamps, or football helmets, need to be carefully protected. A good helmet display case makes sure that nothing happens to any of the elements of my collection. It is really a rational precaution, if you ask me. And helmet display cases also create a more intentional feel to my d?cor. If I just had collectors football helmets lying around, people would look at them like knickknacks or bric-a-brac. No one would really understands that they were there because football is my passion. Without helmet display cases, people just assume that I needed something to fill the room up.
