Georgetown Texas
Williamson County in the largest US state of Texas has its county seat in the city of Georgetown Texas. The city was founded in 1848 and the area became an important agricultural center, especially in the cotton industry. Settlers had gone there because of the San Gabril River, the availability of timber and the cheap, fertile land. When the railroad came in 1878, the area's economy was boosted further.
There are several buildings of historic interest in the old, downtown district, some of them dating back to Victorian times. One of these buildings is the Williamson County Courthouse, built in 1911. It is expected to re-open in 2007 after a refurbishment. The Williamson County Historical Museum has exhibits relating to the local history of the Georgetown Texas and county area. The Georgetown Firefighters Museum is housed in the working fire station and exhibits memorabilia, photographs and equipment from the origin of the Fire Department in the 1800s. A 1922 fire engine in pristine condition is also on display.
For people interested in geology, the Inner Space Cavern is a great cave to explore. Visitors descend into the limestone cavern in a cable car and are guided through miles of passageways. The opening was discovered in 1963 in Georgetown Texas and much of the cave is still to be explored. The cave is illuminated in a light show and the guide gives information on the mammoth and sabre toothed animal bones that have been found there.
A great day out for all the family is found at the Lake Georgetown reservoir. The body of water supplies drinking water to the city and the dam protects the area from flooding. It is also a popular facility for leisure pursuits, including fishing in the well stocked lake. Anglers have the chance to catch different varieties of bass, catfish and sunfish, amongst others. There are picnic areas; camping spots and a hiking and mountain bike trail around the lake. Boating is another favorite pastime on the lake.
Shopping is enjoyable here and there are several antique stores and art and craft outlets. Candles for the home are very popular and visitors are welcomed at the Candle Factory in Georgetown Texas. They make a variety of hand dipped candles, including scented and novelty candles and a range of candle holders. Dining is varied and there are opportunities for many sports, including golf, tennis and water sports.
