In my 31 years of living, I haven't met too many individuals that didn't enjoy a fine cup of java. In fact, I can only name one off the top of my head, and that's my brother. The guy despises coffee with a passion. It's cool; not everyone can appreciate the incomparable flavor and aroma of quality espresso. I on the other hand am a coffee fanatic. Actually I fancy myself as somewhat of an expert. From espresso machines, to drip pots, to coffee houses, to quality beans, to coffee grinders, I know a bit about it all. Then again, I should considering I've lived in four completely different states and enjoyed plenty of java.
All coffee is NOT the same. Some beans are of higher quality, and some coffee is fresher than others. Here's a simple rule of thumb. If you purchase a pound of coffee in an air-tight sealed bag, it can last as long as three months if kept closed. Now this doesn't mean that it will taste great after three months. I merely said it would keep that long. You should try to consume it within a month if possible. Now, once the bag has been opened, you have a two week span. The sooner you use these beans, the fresher your coffee/espresso will taste. But think along the line of two weeks; no more. Now, you'll need one of the decent coffee grinders in your kitchen. These are a crucial tool for those who REALLY love fresh java. You can purchase quality coffee grinders in virtually any kitchen store. The reason you'll want a grinder is so you can grind a portion of beans for each portion of coffee/espresso. Don't grind an entire pound of coffee and then use it over the next two weeks. It will taste OLD. If you have a drip pot, only grind the amount you're getting ready to use. The same goes for espresso machines. You use coffee grinders to grind your beans daily at home. This is what they were made for. Once you start this routine, your coffee will taste so much better.
The good news is you can pick up basic coffee grinders for a small price. This item certainly won't set you back, but it's worth its weight in gold. Furthermore, you can even buy espresso machines and drip pots for your home with the coffee grinders built into the machine. This is what I did and it works perfectly.
