I had always planned on caring for my mother and father in their old age. After all, it seemed a shame to send them to some home where they would be taken care of by underpaid staff who couldn't give them the love that they deserve. I have always thought the best way to make sure that your parents are taken care of is to do it yourself. After all, they do the same thing for you when you are a kid, so it is only fair.
As my parents got older, however, I started to rethink my strategy. It wasn't so much that I didn't want to live with them as that I knew that they wouldn't want to live with me. You see, we have very different ways of looking at the world. I knew that they would never be happy in my house, and my mother is much as told me that one day. That is why I started thinking about independent living centers. I am glad that I did. The independent living center that they have moved into has made them truly happy.
If you are not familiar with centers for Independent living, they are basically facilities for seniors who require a little bit of assistance but are basically able to live on their own. They are also known as retirement communities, and are the perfect location for many seniors. You see, independent living centers have everything that most senior look for. There are all kinds of different recreational activities including swimming, golfing, and a games room.
Even more important, however, the independent living Centers have other seniors for them to associate with. You see, as people get older they tend to feel more isolated. This is one of the biggest causes of premature aging. It has been well proven that people with healthy social lives tend to feel younger and healthier. Seniors who go to the nursing home start to deteriorate very rapidly, but in independent living centers they can continue to live their lives to the fullest.
Of course, independent living centers are not for all seniors. In the case of my parents, it makes the most sense. After all, my parents are still fairly healthy and are able to take care of themselves. Seniors with more serious health problems, however, need more care. They would do better in an assisted living center, or even perhaps a nursing home. Fortunately, my parents don't require either of these services.
